  • Where to get your glasses

Independent optometrists are the best place to get glasses. Consumer Reports magazine reports that independent doctors are a better place to buy glasses than the chain stores. Some highlights from the report include:

Independent doctors offices rated higher than the chain stores for overall satisfaction, accuracy, service, and quality. In some cases the chains charged a little less for glasses, but in some cases they charged more.

The price difference in most cases is easily offset by the higher accuracy, service, and quality. The report also hi-lights some of the bait and switch tactics some chains are using. If it's too good to be true it probably is.

  • Cataracts

A new study of 18,000 male physicians proved that being obese increases the risk for developing cataracts. The obese men had more than a 50% higher risk than men of average weight, and 200% higher risk than the thinnest men, independent of other cataract risk factors. See the section on this page that discusses cataracts.

  • Allergies

If you have seasonal allergies and your eyes itch, tear and burn often, there are several new medications that might be just what you need. They are very good for itchy eyes.

  • Macular degeneration

Recent studies indicate that nutrition plays a role in macular degeneration. If you are developing it, or if someone in your family has it, you should be taking a high potency multi-vitamin with anti-oxidants and minerals. See the section on this page that discusses macular degeneration.

A new type of laser treatment appears to offer new hope to people who have developed vascular nets in the macular area. This type of macular degeneration had a very poor prognosis until now.

  • Glaucoma

Asthmatics who use steroid inhalers may be at a much higher risk for glaucoma. A Canadian study of insurance claims on 48,118 patients ages 66 and older found a 44% higher risk for glaucoma for those using an inhaler vs. those that don't.
