Independent optometrists are the best place to get glasses. Consumer
Reports magazine reports that independent doctors are a better place
to buy glasses than the chain stores. Some highlights from the report
include: The price difference in most cases is easily offset by the higher accuracy, service, and quality. The report also hi-lights some of the bait and switch tactics some chains are using. If it's too good to be true it probably is.
A new study of 18,000 male physicians proved that being obese increases the risk for developing cataracts. The obese men had more than a 50% higher risk than men of average weight, and 200% higher risk than the thinnest men, independent of other cataract risk factors. If you have seasonal allergies and your eyes itch, tear and burn often, there are several new medications that might be just what you need. They are very good for itchy eyes.
Recent studies indicate that nutrition plays a role in macular degeneration. If you are developing it, or if someone in your family has it, you should be taking a high potency multi-vitamin with anti-oxidants and minerals. See the section on this page that discusses macular degeneration. A new type of laser treatment appears to offer new hope to people who have developed vascular nets in the macular area. This type of macular degeneration had a very poor prognosis until now.
Asthmatics who use steroid inhalers may be at a much higher risk for glaucoma. A Canadian study of insurance claims on 48,118 patients ages 66 and older found a 44% higher risk for glaucoma for those using an inhaler vs. those that don't.

We recently commissioned an independent research company to do a telephone survey of our patients. They surveyed 101 randomly selected patients and asked them about their satisfaction with Dr. Steensma's services. The survey was audited by a State University. Overall patient satisfaction was found to be 94% and Dr. Steensma was awarded a rating of "Very high patient satisfaction". Question #1: On a scale of 1-10 how do you feel about the value you've most recently received from Dr. Steensma? 96% rated the value received as an 8, 9 or 10 on a scale of 1-10. Question #2: If you need the services of an optometrist in the future, would you call or recommend Dr. Steensma? 94% said that yes they would call or recommend Dr. Steensma. We are very proud of the results of this study.
Our office is now wheelchair accessible. We have installed special equipment to allow a thorough examination of an individual in a wheelchair.
