Contact lenses are another way of correcting vision problems

Contact lenses are serious business. They are medical devices that can provide many people with improved self image, confidence, sport performance and convenience. Millions of people now wear them successfully, however they can cause eye damage if not correctly fit or correctly worn.

  • Glasses provide good correction for most types of vision problems. They are fairly easy to get used to, but can restrict peripheral vision, fog up, and just get in the way at times. Contact lenses offer superior correction for some vision problems, but may not be suitable for others. They provide excellent peripheral vision and a more natural vision, but they require a gradual buildup of wearing time.
  • The type of contact lens that is best for you is determined by several factors such as your vision problem, your eye health, and your lifestyle. Hard lenses have been around for fifty years, but no one fits them anymore due to the eye health problems they can cause.
  • Gas permeable lenses are rigid, but made of materials that allow the eye to breathe. They are one way of correcting for significant amounts of astigmatism. They offer superior vision but are not as comfortable as soft lenses.
  • Soft lenses offer comfort and good vision for most people. If a person has much astigmatism, they need either special soft lenses called toric lenses or gas permeable lenses.
  • Disposable lenses are the newest type of contact lens. Many eye health problems that develop while wearing contacts are due to a buildup of deposits from your tears. With disposable contacts you don't keep the lenses long enough for that buildup to occur. Disposable lenses are also much more convenient because you always have a spare pair. It's not a problem if you lose or tear a lens.
  • There are several different modes of disposable contact lens wear: Daily wear with the lenses replaced after two weeks. The lenses are removed and cleaned each night. This is the most common mode. Extended wear with the lenses replaced after one week. The lenses are not removed or cleaned at night. This is the simplest mode but does have a much greater chance of health problems. One day daily wear with the lenses replaced every day. There is no cleaning required. This is the ultimate in simplicity.
  • Social occasional wear for those times you just don't want to wear your glasses. Sport occasional wear for those activities in which glasses just don't work well like basketball, golfing, and swimming. Monovision occasional wear is a technique used to give people over 40 both near and far vision without wearing bifocals or reading glasses. Disposable contacts are available in clear or in colors that can change your eye color to blue, green, hazel or violet.

Where is the best place to get contact lenses?

We will help you to determine if contacts are a good option for you and will be happy to answer any questions you may have..

Price should not be the primary factor when determining where to be fit with or purchase contact lenses. Confidence in the skills and integrity of the person fitting the lenses should be the greatest concern. These days there are several places to purchase contact lenses.
  • Some Discount stores and Drug stores are now carrying contact lenses. They sell lenses! They cannot tell you if a lens fits correctly or what is wrong if you have a problem. Several Department stores and Chain optical's fit contact lenses. Some have doctors and some use technicians
  • Some Independent optical's fit contact lenses, but they do not have an optometrist, so they may not detect some problems that might occur. The independent optometrist (That's us) is the only one who has extensively studied contact lenses and has the freedom to use all types of lenses.
  • We want to do what is right for you, not just make a quick sale. Dr. Steensma has provided eyecare in this practice for 24 years. What's best for you is our primary concern. We think that this is the best place to be fit with contact lenses.
